AfNOG 2019  Workshop on Network Technology

AfNOG 2019 Workshop, Tutorials and Conferences will be held in Kampala - Uganda from 9th to 21th June 2019.

The AfNOG Workshop on Network Technology aims to offer advanced training to people who are in the process of developing and enhancing an Internet-connected network with regional and international connectivity. The target audience includes senior and mid-level technical staff of Commercial Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Telecom Networks,  Academic networks, Government networks, NGO networks & Civil Society.

The Workshop's Instructors are an International team with many years of experience in operating large networks and teaching about network operations.

The workshop is divided into Eight parallel Tracks: ( 5 English Tracks & 3 French Tracks).  The Application Process for the Workshop is however Closed and Admission into the various Tracks is in progress.

Following the Workshop will be Tutorials from 9th June - 11th June 2019 as follows;

  • Blockchain Technology
  • Instrumentation
  • Smart Phone Applications Development
  • OpenNMS

AFRINIC-30

AFRINIC-30 will take place in Kampala Uganda from June 15 to June 21, 2019. 

Our workshops and training will take place from June 15 to June 18, 2019. AFRINIC organizes two meetings each year in various countries in Africa. AFRINIC meetings bring together actors, professionals and organizations related to the Internet. The internet community discusses policies governing the distribution of Internet numbering resources in the Africa region, sharing technical knowledge, and participating in workshops and training.

About the workshops

The workshops enable network engineers and operators in the region to acquire the fundamental knowledge needed to build and manage their networks.

The workshops generally cover:

  • IPv6 deployment
  • managing Internet dialing resources
  • network security

Future Meetings

AFRINIC Meetings are held twice a year, rotating in countries across the continent. They provide a platform for all African governments and global stakeholders to discuss and benchmark issues regarding Internet policy, Internet governance, ICT4D, Internet access and technical capacity building to gather to discuss, collaborate, learn and disseminate information about these key areas of Africa’s Internet development.

AFRINIC is looking to partner with institutions or organizations to act as the local hosts for AIS-20 to be held in 2020. Local hosts at AFRINIC meetings benefit from widespread exposure to local and global audience as well as an opportunity meet partners, deliver key organizational messages and be seen to be supporting the growth and development of internet in Africa.

  • Have a valid passport
  • Invitation letter from host.
  • Hotel reservation.
  • Air Ticket
  • USD 50 for Uganda tourist Visa.
  • USD 100 for the tourist East African Visa

About Kampala, Uganda

Kampala is the capital and the largest city of Uganda.  Kampala is also known as the “City of Hills”.  Kampala was named after the graceful impala antelopes.  The city has numerous rolling hills and wetlands which was once the home of several antelope species. Kampala is almost situated to the equator and is about 3,900 feet in altitude which explains the mild and pleasant climate.

Ebola

An Ebola outbreak is affecting north-eastern provinces of DRC where there are borders with Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan.

Kampala however is not affected and strict measures have been taken to manage the situation on the borders. 

Tourism

Places of attractions in Kampala are:

  • The Bulange and Lubiri. Bulange is the Buganda Kingdom’s parliament and the Lubiri the King Kabaka’s residence
  • Kasubi Tombs, which are UNESCO World Heritage
  • Lake Victoria, the second largest freshwater lake in the world
  • Uganda National Museum, the biggest and oldest museum in Kampala
  • Gadhafi Mosque, the national mosque in Uganda

Fun facts about Kampala:

  • The number of hills in Kampala is 7 and has since grown into many more
  • Kampala’s altitude is 1.2 Km above sea level
  • Don’t wear a Rolex in Kampala, but eat one! It is a chapatti rolled with onion omelette, tomatoes and cabbage
  • Hang out at a Kafunda! A small roadside bar.
  • Check the Owino Market where you can get second-hand bags, shoes and even clothes

The official spoken languages in Uganda are English and Swahili.  Uganda is a multilingual country with forty native languages which can be grouped into 3 main languages, mostly Bantu, Central Sudanic and Nilotic.

Greetings Etiquette:

  • Handshakes are common
  • A handshake is usually appropriate between men and women but it’s best to wait for the woman to extend her hand first otherwise a bow or a nod of acknowledgement will suffice
